5 Bits of Hiking Gear I Wish Beginners Would Use (But They Don't)

►Join My Free Skool:

These are a few things I wish every hiker, no matter their level of experience brought with them but in particular, I think it’s the beginners that will learn most from this one…

Gear I mentioned in this video:

1. Katadyn BeFree Water Filter –
2. Colgans Trowel –
3. Map Software – Search “maps me” or “outdoor active in app store”
4. Anker Charger –
5. Silverlight Socks – use code “basecamp15” for 15% off
6. Injinji Socks –
7. Grip6 Socks –

None of this gear is sponsored but these are affiliate links so I can earn a percentage.

  2. Great gear guide — thanks! For multi-day backpacking in mixed weather, what sleeping bag temp rating and tent would you recommend? Any tips to balance warmth vs. pack weight?

  3. You go “hiking” on Appalachian Trail you better bring your gun and knife

  4. Don’t camouflage your poop hole! Stick stake it…no one likes poop shovel or poop covered tent stakes.

  5. 1. Non Transparent bottle (e.g. Osprey 58) & Chlorine is cheaper for beginners.
    2. Agree.
    3. Paper map surely?
    4. Phone only for emergency calls, never comes out.
    5. Wool is King. Wool with silver? Likely a marketing gimmick, and will rapidly wash out. Might end up in boot lining though. Polyester fine for beginners.
